Integral protection of the olive tree
As part of the project 'High technology for sustainable extensive olive cultivation and innovations in the traditional food value chain' realized by the NGO Business Start Center Bar in cooperation with Barska Uljar doo in BSC Bar on 21.03.2024. a workshop was held on the topic 'Integral olive protection'.
The lecturers at the workshop were professors of the Faculty of Biotechnology, University of Montenegro - Dr. Snjezana Hrnčić and prof. Dr. Nedeljko Latinović. Both lecturers have many years of professional and professional experience in the field of integral plant protection, and they gained their experience in Italy, the USA, Germany, and in the field of registration of plant protection products (pesticides) in Slovenia and Great Britain.
The workshop covered two topics:
• Within the topic of the most important diseases of olive trees and their control, Prof. Dr. Nedeljko Latinović presented the diseases that attack olives, the most famous of which is 'Peacock's eye' or olive leaf spotting.
• As part of the topic of the most important olive pests, Dr. Snjejana Hrnčić spoke about various types of pests/insects that attack olives. The stages of development of these insects and their impact on the olive fruit were explained in detail and with pictures, so that the participants would be able to identify which pest it is based on the appearance of the fruit. She also presented how these pests can be controlled naturally or with the help of registered means of protection (pesticides).
After the lecturer's presentation and the discussion they developed among the participants, the story was completed by the representative of the Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs, Mr. Milka Petrušić, who presented the participants with the support they can get from the Administration, how they can be contacted and how to comply with legal obligations related to pesticide records.
The workshop was followed with great interest by 22 participants. The participants were mostly olive growers from Bar, Budva, Podgorica, representatives of the association of olive growers and oil growers.
The project is co-financed by the Government of Montenegro and the EU through the Grant scheme 'Scientific potential in the service of innovation'.
So far, through the project, we have installed weather stations in 4 olive groves in Bar. These weather stations will provide the opportunity for olive growers to act preventively to protect the olive tree.
